Smith Mountain Lake is a great place to live. We are really looking forward to everyone's visit. Gail and I talked to Uncle Pat this morning. He said he is packed and ready to go. It is supposed to rain this week but doesn't look like a washout, mostly thunderstorms and showers here and there. We can still wear our bikinis and get some sun.
Ginger: Hope it's ok if I stick with my "old lady bathing suit" - you know, the one with the skirt to my knees! It's been years since I wore a bikini! I think I was 17....... LOL
What do you all mean, bikini's ? I got rid of my yellow boka-dot bikini years ago. My bathing suit has a skirt too, Betty. You'll not catch me in that in mixed company though.I don't get in water over my ankles anyway. Sorta like your song. I don't get my bathsuit wet yet.
Oh, my, I had forgotten about that song - "but she didn't get her bathing suit wet, yet!" How long are you staying at SML? I guess Uncle Pat is on his way to VA this morning. It is so rainy and foggy here - it's plum depressing......
The weather forecast here is still flash flood watch - not a warning. Sun has been shining most of the day. Diane, everything is still on to meet you at 10:00 a.m. at Jennifer's house.
Jan, did Uncle Pat make it to your house?
We got home around three. Uncle Pat left to go home shortly after. I'm feeling sad and depressed. I am not supposed to feel this way. I think the trip was to fast. Uncle Pat wanted to buy us lunch at Cracker Barrel but we were in to big a hurry for that. We ate at Mc Donalds.. Not good.! We did have a good time at Gingers and Lanny. Jay had a blast and wanted to stay longer.
Thanks Ginger and Lanny for all your hospitality.
Thanks Ginger and Lanny I had a good time I left Jans house at 3pm got home at 8pm
Cliff left Ginger's and Lanny's shortly after you did, Jan, and I stayed a while longer for a cup of coffee and a planning session with Ginger, Betty and Diane. It was hard to leave, but all good things must end. We are home safely now and I'm trying to make up to Bailey and Benson for leaving them for a week (even though Joe and Duane stayed with them and pampered them the whole time). They are turning their backs to Cliff and me, playing hard to get.
I was surprised to find out that Uncle Pat headed out for Ohio after you guys got back to Clintwood, but glad to know he has that much energy and made it home safely.
Thanks for the treasures you brought. When I got home I learned that several things had sold at the Market while I was away and I had to scurry over there to add a few things and reorganize what was left. Tomorrow I will rearrange and replenish. Good stuff.
Thanks for hemming my pants. I feel like I have a whole new wardrobe.
Don't be depressed. "Next time" will be here before you know it.
You are welcome, Uncle Pat. I'm glad you enjoyed it and I'm glad you made it home safely.
Diane and I are still at SML - we went out to eat at Cancun Mexican Restaurant last evening; today we're going to get a pedicure, then go to the lake and get some sun - finally some sunshine! Miss all you who were here, it was wonderful, but much to short a visit. I say like Gail "next time" will be here before we know it.
Uncle Pat - glad you are home safely.
I will post pictures when I get back to NC on Sunday. I have some good ones, but it's very time consuming and I don't want to take up too much space on Ginger's computer.
Glad you girls are getting your pedicure today. I got mine yesterday in the garden. My 'next time" will be longer I hope. I hate these trips when you spend more time on the road traveling than you do visiting but I don't want to wear my welcome out either. Maybe I can get back in the groove today. I'm just "blaaaah! I'm going to get some pictures developed today. I like picture that I can hold in my hand. I have some good ones. Jay sneaked and made one of me sleeping as we were coming home but you all will not see that one.
In the blog above I said we were in a hurry and couldn't stop at Cracker Barrel. I should have said Gillis was in a hurry. The rest was ready and willing. He needs to slow down and live a little.
I'm glad U.P. is home safe and sound. I believe he has more "get-up- and-go than any of us.
Mi Mi was so busy, we didn't get the respect we deserved so we left without a pedicure!
Diane bought a bathing suit; I bought a caps and SML shirt for the grandkids. Now, we're heading to the lake to sit on the boat and read; fireworks tonight, then home tomorrow.
Jan, Kathy Gail, Uncle Pat and Jayden - wish you were still here with us. Gillis is in too big a hurry!
It is good to know everyone is home safely after the 4th of July celebration at the lake. Thanks, Ginger and Lanny, for your amazing hospitality. Every second was a blast!
We really enjoyed having everyone stay with us for a few days. Heather and Lisa are still here but will be leaving this evening. It certainly will be lonesome around here after they leave and we settle down to our normal routine. Looking forward to the memorial and apple butter making. Mark your calendars for the 4th next year at SML.
Good pictures Betty. I have some good ones too. I'll put some on fb. when I get some help. I went to Rite Aid and printed some off to send to U.P.Won't,he be surprised?:-)
Not if he reads this blog!
Jan, it was wonderful spending time with all of you at SML. I'm like Ginger in that I hope we can do it again next year. So nice of Lanny to put up with Ginger's quirky family!
Happy Birthday Liam and Logan - Cousins who have never met! Maybe someday.
Logan will be spending a week with his Grand-ma-ma, Kathy Gail, at the end of July. Oh, what fun!
Happy Birthday Liam and Logan.
Happy Birthday Liam and Logan!! I remember Logan as a baby but haven't met Liam. Grand-ma-ma get ready!Logan will be there soon.
Happy Birthday Liam and Logan
I came back from SML with a slight sinus problem. Now I have a big sinus problem. Today has been my worst day and I have felt lousy but no rest here.. I've been cleaning out Barry's freezer so he can move it to his house. I had enough blackberries for Cox's army and I don't need any blueberries for a long time, Betty. I'm making blueberry syrup with some of them. There's not going to be a lot of stuff going in the freezer like it has in the past. I'm getting lazy in my old age.
Now I must get in bed and get my beauty rest. Doesn't seem to work for me though but it does get me through another day.
Jan, hope you get some sinus relief soon. That is a miserable feeling!
I agree about the freezer thing - I've been putting in way more than we use. It won't be that way this year because the rain has ruined the garden. We may get a few beans and corn, but the tomatoes and peppers have rotted at the roots! They were so beautiful a couple of weeks ago. Blueberries and blackberries are plentiful, but red and sour..... they can't ripen without sunshine. We do have peaches, so plentiful the tree limbs are breaking. And 70% chance of more rain today! I'm praying for sunshine.....
Diane - do you have a new e-mail address. The Lee County Schools isn't working any more.......
I have a gmail account. email@example.com
What a difference a day makes. Feels like like a fall evening here and that's okay. I've been in the garden and didn't even work up a sweat. I will be canning beans in a day or two. All the rain has been good for the cabbage, cauliflower and broccoli. We are putting cauliflower and broccoli in the freezer I am going to try canning cabbage this year. Barry and I share everything so a lot of this stuff is for him.His girlfriend is over there now helping him make dill pickles.I'm glad she takes an interest because this old woman needs all the help she can get this year.
Here's a joke for Uncle Pat. Do you know what loves to have it's head chopped off? Broccoli because it is anxious to grow a new one. Not true for cauliflower, one head is all for it.Same for cabbage but I have seen it grow little nubbin's. back
Jan I did not know that I like couliflower better
Jan, don't work too hard! I hope you have more luck with preserving the cabbage than I did. I froze it and it wasn't fit to eat. Also, my broccoli and cauliflower was full of worms - I froze them too and didn't even know it until it was too late. They floated to the top of the water when I cooked them - had to throw the whole meal out the back door!
Glad you are feeling better!
I know Betty, You have to be careful with broccoli and cauliflower. We shouldn't worry though, that's just more protein.:-) I soaked mine in salt water for a long time and then dipped it in boiling water for about 3 minutes, then cooled and froze it.I didn't see a worm.
I talked to Ol" Bob about Uncle Pat. Waiting to hear more.
Looks like we ain't go much to say. I have a story to tell tomorrow. I'm too tired tonight. It's funny and it ain't about me.
Waiting to hear your story and to hear more news about Uncle Pat's condition!
I just spoke to Uncle Pat who is safely at home after a couple of days and a night in the hospital. Now he can get some rest!
Uncle Pat says he can breathe better now and his heart rate is back to normal. Fluid had gathered around his heart and lungs and was causing the discomfort. He has to keep that under control now with an increased dosage of his water pill and an eye on his weight so he will know if the fluid starts backing up again. Thank goodness for good doctors and modern medicine.
Jan, I am eager to hear your story too.
Glad to hear Uncle Pat is doing better. Maybe he can tell by how he feels when he needs more lassix. Hard to keep everything in balance.
I too am eager to here the story.
Glad the Drs found Uncle Pat's problem and he is home. No place like home!
Okay, here's my story and it's so funny and it's about Mick. I can tell you all one thing ,you better never make her mad . I found out the other day that is a expert marksman. She has an apple tree in her yard loaded with beautiful apples. She noticed they had started to disappear. She came up with a plan " hide and watch" Yep, sure enough she saw the long tailed furry little theif running across the yard with an apple in his mouth. Next time she would be ready with her gun( a pellet gun that is). A little later she took a peek and there he sat way up high in the tree with another apple in his mouth. She took aim ,-shot-,the apple fell and the squirrel stared at her in disbelief-- then fell to the ground--, dead. Now, I thought that was funny but the very next day she shot the whole limb out of the tree with the very same pellet gun. Please, never make her mad OH! I forgot to tell you she left the corpse laying stretched out for all the other little sguirrels to see what would happen to them if they came near her apple tree again
Poor squirrel! I'd do the same thing even if I was accused of torture!
Way to go, Mick!
I talked with Uncle Pat again this morning and he sounds good. He slept well without breathing problems and is planning to stay inside today to avoid the heat.
Now that's funny. I don't care who you are.
I feel sorry for the squirrel....
Merl better watch out, hadn't he?.
Very hot here already this morning. I've been picking beans and I'm wet with sweat even though I tried to hide behind the corn.
I talked to U.P. last night. He sounds good and said he was feeling better. Hope we can go see him before too long. We laughed a lot about Mick's shooting skills .He doesn't know if he is getting company this week-end or not. James is going to be with him some this week. James is the guy that gives the jelly with a kick.
He wants to come here in Aug. if he's able .We laughed a lot about Mick and her shooting skills.
I know but back in the day it would have been fried up nice and brown and on the table with gravy and biscuits. That doesn't sound very appetizing, does it?
Looks like I messed up on the blog above but that's okay. I forgive myself. I do that a lot.
I've been on the phone with sguirrel woman. I would say killer but that's not nice.My dishwasher isn't working right so together we've been trying to solve the problem. She does everything else so I think I may need to hire her to come out and work on it and while she's her see if she can fix my oven and after that check out the washer because the water runs in too slow. As you can tell U.P., I have a lot of problems but one thing for sure, I have a nice new computer that is working well.
Is your dishwasher fixed yet? If not, maybe you can just catch a tub full of rain water and wash them outside.
We may get a few beans from the garden, but otherwise it's a disaster. Beautiful heirloom tomatoes are drowned! I was so looking forward to drizzling a little olive oil and vinegar over sliced "Mr. Strippy". Wish I was back at SML - I saw some perfectly-sized "Cherokee Purple" at the market there.
Betty, don't worry if your tomatoes don't make it. I know where we can find some. They are real easy to get to and the best tomatoes ever. They are not ripe yet and that 's even better. It will give us time to make a plan.We will have to travel several miles to Lancaster Ohio. I'm sure you know the place so I will not mention the street or Ave.just in case it may tip the owners off'.
We will have to get in and get out fast and that will work because the tomatoes are pretty close to the back street. They are located in two back yards close together. You can take one patch and I'll take the other. Heaven help us if we get caught. Maybe we better take Mick along with her pellet gun just in case) and Merl. He can drive the get away truck.
Didn't get my dishwasher fixed but did get a new one today.Next will be getting oven fixed so I won't have to run up and down the stairs.
Our beans didn't do good either . I've canned 28 quarts and may get one more canning.I usually do around 70 to 100 jars but that's okay. I have plenty left over and I'm about to get tired anyway. Too much other stuff to do.
Jan the Squirrels got all of the Tomatoes I need mick with her gun
Jan, sounded like a good plan, but, I think it will be harder to pull off now!
You are right Betty, It wouldn't work now. Uncle Pat has caught on and I have tomatoes getting ripe now anyway
Kathy Gail, Looks like you have a house full of kids. Take your vitamins so you can keep up. I bet they love " The House That Cliff Built" Enjoy your week!
Happy Birthday, Lanny DeCamp !!~ Hope you have a big bowl of your favorite ice cream!
Happy Birthday, Lanny! Have a good one.
Happy Birthday, Lanny. Enjoy!
We are heading over the Creamery this afternoon for a Root Beer Float.
I am so jealous! I bet that is a wonderful place to eat ice cream!
It is, you should try it with us some time (hee, hee).
I've heard they also have the most delicious Ruben Sandwiches in the world!
Happy birthday Lanny
Yes, and cherry ice cream with chocolate chunks is wonderful.
lets not forget those gourmet chocolate covered Virginia peanuts.
I am so jealous!I That ice cream sounds delicious and I'm really craving some right now. Oh well, It would just make me fat or fatter so I'll just go bed and dream about it. Gillis says we are coming back up there when he gets his fishing license but who knows when that will be.
Jan, you all are welcome any time
Everbody pray for a safe trip for granddaughters, Lauren ,Lindsey and Allie. They will traveling to Ga tomorrow. Lindsey will be the " pilot". That is some very precious cargo and this granny worries a lot. Lindsey and Lauren are with their Dad in Ky. They will pick Aliie up in Knoxville and go on home. Allie will stay with them for a few days. I'll not rest until I know they are safely home. Remember they are eighteen, seventeen and thirteen. Pray!
I don't blame you for being anxious, Jan! Very precious cargo! I will definitely be praying for their safety.
I assuming that the girls made their trip safely. I haven't heard a thing.
Wish everybody was here to share our first Mr. Stripey. He is hugh, ugly and out of shape but he is going to be delicious on a big ol' bologna sandwich tomorrow. I don't think we have ever raised a tomato that big before.
I took Jayden to basketball camp today. I knew I would have four hours to kill while he was there. A good time to set up at the flea market, kill a little time and make a lot of money, right? Wrong! I made $5 and they charged me $5 to set up. Worst I've ever done and that's not all.I bought a basket of peaches for $4.50 and when I got home I only had 10 peaches. I think that's sorta expensieve but I guess it depends on how bad you want a peach Oh well, Jay had a good time at camp and I didn't have a heat stroke..I'm takingJay back to camp tomorrow and I'll have 4 more hours to kill but I'll be somewhere where it's nice and cool, eating peaches.
Jan, I love your stories - you are so funny.
I'm still praying for the girls and will give thanks as soon I know they safely reached their destination.
The signs are in the legs, so I have mixed together this year's mixed pickles and they have already started to "work". Can't wait to taste the finished product.
Our Mr. Stripey has not produced a single tomato - it blooms and the blooms rot! I've bought a few at the Farmer's Market and Zeke loves them. Too bad they are so expensive......
Betty, I finally did get the word that the girls got there okayI guess the Mom's knew they were okay and didn't think to let me know.I was in Norton again today killing time while waiting for Jay. It's not hard for me to shop for 4 hours. I had to go to Tractor Supply for Gillis both days. I could go right back tomorrow and kill 4 more hours if my feet didn't hurt and I had lots of money. I may have to if Jay's Dad doesn't show up to take him. Bless Jay's little heart He is so sweet and doesn't get the attention he should from his Dad.
By the way.I had lunch at Toco Bell then while waiting in the shade for Jay I had one of my big juicy peaches. Mighty well worth the money.
I'm thankful the girls are safe; I'm thankful Jay has you!
Makes me hungry. Time for breakfast.
This morning I'll be make Jalepano Jelly - wonderful with cream cheese and crackers!
Later today I will post the pictures KG has taken of her grandchildren! Sounds like she and the kids are having the time of their lives!
