The Flavors of Ireland with the Collins Family
Mountain Rose Vineyard - Wise, Va.
The St. Patrick’s Day celebration was a hit on Saturday, March 13, 2010. We had an Irish feast along with Irish music and dance to celebrate the Irish ancestry.
The “Collins Family” originally from Pound, Virginia entertained the audience with their “Celtic” sound of music, their sense of humor, their Irish dancing, and their lovely personalities. The audience was in awe of their entertainment. It all began with Kathy Collins Barber serving as MC. She had several roles to play and did them all with ease. She kept us entertained with her sense of humor, singing, and her blooming personality of joy.
The Collins Family “Uncle Pat” entertained everyone with his jokes in a “storytelling” kind of way. Lots of laughter was heard throughout. He hardly gave anyone time to recover from one joke before he went on to another.
The young children performed “Irish dancing” for us. They had us all clapping our hands and stomping our feet. They put on a “Riverdance” type of performance. Way to go girls!!
The sister/brother routine with their homemade instruments was very entertaining. Teresa Collins Collier with her “limber jack doll” (a wooden stick figure with limber arms and legs) dancing on the board and Winfred Collins with his wash board made a perfect team. They, too, had us clapping our hands and stomping our feet with the rhythm and drumming sound of their instruments. Of course, Teresa had the crowd going with her wooden man dancing to the beat on her wooden board.
Winfred Collins, his wife, Judy, and children, Alyssa, Kara, and Madison entertained us with their lovely voices. The harmonizing among the family filled everyone’s heart with joy.
The Collins sisters, Teresa, Kathy, and Betty with brother Winfred accompanying on guitar led the audience in song. The lyrics were written by Kathy. Kathy made sure the audience joined them when they sang the chorus. We all had fun singing with the family.
Betty Collins Brown and her brother, Winfred, shared a little of what it was like growing up with eleven siblings. Betty has written several songs to express the family’s Christian love as well as ballads of how her Mom and Dad first begun. Her lovely voice and her gift for lyrics were enjoyed by everyone.
Hannah Collins, the daughter of Joey and Brenda Collins, entertained us with her lovely voice singing “Danny Boy”. Hannah had entertained us earlier in the evening with her talent on the violin. Her skills with the Celtic tone on the violin made you feel like you were in Ireland.
The evening was concluded with the Collins Family leading the audience in “Amazing Grace”. Susan Mullins assisted the group throughout the evening with her amazing talent on the keyboard.
The St. Patrick’s Day Celebration made for a beautiful evening. The dinner was in Ireland fashion with shepherd’s pie, corned beef and cabbage, potato cakes, oatmeal pie, and “green sangria”.
Thanks to the Mountain Rose Vineyard staff, Suzanne Lawson, David and Brandi Lawson along with the Collins Family for a lovely evening and sharing with us the song, dance, storytelling, and music of the Appalachian mountains and the mountains of Ireland.
