VOICES
By Teresa Collins Collier
September 2006
I thought I heard your voice today
When I was home alone
Cleaning out my empty nest
Finding time that was my own
You were calling to your brothers
Hurry, hurry, come and see
As you jumped into the leaves
That were piled beneath the tree
They were calling back to you
Let’s pile them up again
Laughing as you piled them higher
The leaves were scattered as you ran
It seemed to me your voices
While you were at play
Were just outside my window
Yet they are many years away
Your voices now are deeper
Your conversation more refined
But today for just a moment
Your baby voices filled my mind
I’m a little sad but thankful
That I had them for a time
Wishing I had listened better
When those voices were still mine
*Written shortly after Melody's (her only daughter's) wedding*
